WHO ARE WE?
PAUL DURRANT
The son of Jimmy Durrant - a top London session musician, Paul was given his first guitar by family friend Pete Townshend of The Who. From that point on Paul was destined to a life in the music business and has had an illustrious career as a Musician, Touring Techie, Studio Manager & an Engineer/Producer.
Paul has worked in some of the Worlds great studios including Air, Berwick St, Genetic, Eel Pie Studios, Hit Factory NY, Monnow Valley, Oceanic, Olympic, Rockfield.
Moving from London to Cardiff in the early 90's he founded the famous basement Grassroots studio, the first community studio in Wales. Grassroots went on to become the model that inspired the hundreds of community studios that now abound across the whole U.K. Catatonia, Bullet For My Valentine, Eddie & The Hotrods, Lostprophets, Manchild, People In Planes, Stereophonics, Super Furry Animals, Technotronics, & Tigertailz amongst countless others all recorded with Paul at Grassroots.
In 2000 Paul finally closed Grassroots basement studio in order to resurrect and manage the famous Monnow Valley Studios in Monmouth whose client list is littered with the likes of Black Sabbath, Big Country, The Cult, The Charletans, The Coral, Echo & The Bunnymen, EMF, Judas Priest, Manic Street Preachers, Queen, Oasis, Pulp, Robert Plant, Rush, Stereophonics, Stone Roses, Super Furry Animals, etc.
In 2004 Paul left Monnow Valley to set up the now legendary Stir Studio in Cardiff. Stir became known as the best studio in Cardiff with a fantastic live room & its incredible vintage Trident mixing console (The actual desk Oasis used to mix Definitely Maybe, & record & mix Whats The Story Morning Glory). Stir became a second home to the Manic Street Preachers, & top producer Greg Haver, Richard Jackson recorded the classic Automatic track Monster & several of the tracks on The Automatic's debut album too. Alex Silva, & Dave Eringa recorded James Dean Bradfields solo album Great Western. Other clients included BBC Rad 1's Bethan & Huw show, Dolly Parton Enterprises, McClusky, Mel C (Sporty Spice) Los Campesinos, EMI, Polygram, Sony, Universal, Threatmantics, Tigertailz, Y Peth.
In late 2008 after his wife was involved in a serious car accident Paul called time on Stir, & the Manic Street Preachers took over the reigns. Having taken a sabbatical from running studios to spend some much needed time with his family, Paul concentrated on Producing and mentoring several unsigned South Wales bands including Circle Of One, Eject Pilot Eject, Kissilver, Ladies Love A Superhero, JP3, Shooting The Moon,The Emergency, The Unsung, etc using studios in & around Cardiff but mainly the former Stir Studio.
Paul is very proud of the new Stir Studio, which is the largest in Cardiff with a fantastic atmosphere & is looking forward to producing recordings of the highest standards, continuing to develop and inspire young bands to greater heights.
